Quads Think Different: Make a Universal Ding

Thank you, Mrs. Cobb and her fantastic grade seventh grade students for teaching us about introductions and conclusions.

Did you hear the sounds and see the action in Sammy W‘s introduction:
“Bang. ‘What the heck is that?’ I said to myself. Bang! ‘Alright, who’s there?’ A window shattered…”?

Did you feel the relief in Kyle’s cool moves in his conclusion: “I drop to the ground and the birds can’t react in time. They finish themselves off, and I am still alive…”?

Better take time to read them again, and add your own short stories with the focus introductions and conclusions.

I hope you also read the tribute to Steve Jobs in Mrs. Cobb’s post, Think Different.

It’s true. I’m a Mac fan, and the passing of Steve Jobs while sad, still leaves me with a dream:

that the people of the world can still Think Different.

To continue that dream, I’d like to share another phrase from this amazing man: “I want to put a ding in the universe.” – Macstories.net

It’s true that he has put quite a “ding” in the universe, but we can each do that each day in small ways to make the day a better one for someone else.  For instance, I try to greet or compliment as many people as I can in the hallway each morning. So many of us start the day rushed, so if I can share a smile or a word in the morning, maybe that will help those people’s day be better. It’s a small “ding,” but I think it helps.

How about you? If you could put a helpful “ding” in the universe, what would that be? What small thing could you do for your family or friends that puts a smile — a little ding– in the universe each day?

Now, if you can’t think of anything, how about sharing how someone made your day better? What do you appreciate about what someone has done to help you? I could say, I appreciate my neighbor teacher, Mr. Johnson, who frequently stops by to make sure we are working on similar projects and objectives. He could just go his own way, but for the kids, he’s willing to check in and work together. I appreciate that.

So: please take a moment to plan a “ding” in the universe or to appreciate one:

1. What small thing could you do for your family or friends that puts a smile — a little ding– in the universe each day?
or
2. What do you appreciate about what someone has done to help you?

Put a ding in the universe and Think Different.

Happiness. I love seeing people happy. I bet if I folded the laundry more and fed the dog more it would make my parents really happy. It would also help them out.

I also love seeing my friends happy. My friends are always so helpful to me in ways they don’t understand. They always help me study for tests and quizzes when I don’t understand the material. I bet if I helped them the way they help me it would put a smile on their face.

Friends. They always help me out. I am really lucky to have such good friends. My friend Libby is a great example. Whenever I have questions I always go to Libby and she is happy to help me. I very much appreciate it. When I have a question about an upcoming test, she takes time out of her day to go over the material with me. She is so helpful and I could never thank her enough.

Your beginning is nice because reapeating the question over again gets really repititive and dull.

To put a little ding in the universe each day I could say hello to everyone I see. I could help my mom with chores around the house more. I could fold laundry, clean dishes, feed pets, make beds, and many more. Although these are all great things to do, the one thing I want to do that will put a ding in the universe is help people. Recent personal events made me stop and think. I mostly thought about how people were hurting and I was just sitting and watching and how I had the power to make these people feel better, but I ignored it. As I thought, I decided to change my actions. From then on, I would be more caring, I would listen to other people’s problems and give them advice, and I would try to stop these problems. If my actions were successful, they could put smiles on faces and a ding in the universe.

    1. Kathleen From Brigantine October 11, 2011 at 9:40 am |

I feel the same way! Being more caring is the way to go. Good job!

      1. kylie(brigantine) October 11, 2011 at 9:44 am |

When all else fails, there is still kindness. Without it, many of us would have nothing.

      2. Jimmy ( Brigantine) October 11, 2011 at 9:46 am |

I agree. Caring is the way to go. It will make a “ding”.

    2. Zainab (Brigantine) October 11, 2011 at 9:52 am |

I definitely agree. Nice beginning. Good job!

  3. Riley October 10, 2011 at 12:41 pm |

What I would do to put smiles on faces each day to make a ding. Is helping my parents with the dishes, feeding the cats, and getting along with my brothers could probably help out my parents a lot. That would help out everyone in my house more than myself. I plan to do that a lot so I can make a “ding” in the universe every single day.

    1. Kathleen From Brigantine October 11, 2011 at 9:43 am |

Everything you stated I agree. By doing all those things it can be very helpful. Keep up the good work!

    2. Tara (Brigantine) October 11, 2011 at 9:45 am |

I agree ! Doing all of this stuff will make a smile on faces everyday. Great Job !

      1. Jimmy ( Brigantine) October 11, 2011 at 9:48 am |

I also agree to Tara. I would enjoy a person to do all of this stuff to me.

    3. Zainab (Brigantine) October 11, 2011 at 9:56 am |

Not everyone likes to do chores, but it if it brings a smile to someones face then u shouldnt waste your time and do it right away.

    4. Shawn(brigantine) October 11, 2011 at 10:06 am |

It’s great to do all those great things. Keep up with the good deeds!

    5. Shawn(Brigantine) October 12, 2011 at 6:13 pm |

Thats great to help your parents, feed your cats, and getting along with your brothers. Thats just a great way to make a ding in the world, nice work Riley!

    6. Jake (Brigantine) October 13, 2011 at 9:53 am |

That will make a “ding”. I might start doing that as well.

  4. Multy October 10, 2011 at 1:03 pm |

What I would do to put more smiles on faces is help my family as much as possible. Since they’re adults, my parents are probably very stressful. I would help them by doing all my chores and trying not to bother them when they are doing work. I’m sure this would make them much happier.

I would also help my friends. I would help them by studying with them for a big test coming u so we will both do well. I would also help both of us by going to fun places after school to relax. This way we would both be happier because we’d have good grades and we would’ve had a great time.

I appreciate all that my family has done for me. They always help me when I need help, and they pay attention to all my activities in school to make sure I’m doing OK. My family tries their best to make sure that all my needs are taken care of.

    1. Multy October 10, 2011 at 1:05 pm |

            1. Jake (Brigantine) October 12, 2011 at 9:46 am |

Don’t worry Tj we all make mistakes every now and again.

    2. Nicole (Brigantine) October 11, 2011 at 9:47 am |

I also, appreciate all my family has done for me. I too, will try to not bother them when their doing their work. Since, sometimes I am a little too chatty.

  5. Kofi October 10, 2011 at 1:59 pm |

Well, one thing you could do is do something kind for someone else. By doing this we will be making the world a better place one person at a time. Also it can influence others to do it to.There are lots of things I appreciate people doing for me in life, but I’ll just name a few. First and foremost I appreciate family because without family you have no one to learn from and nothing to build on. Secondly, I appreciate school; even though some people hate school it is where we learn things that will prepare us for adulthood; also, it is where we learn how to be social. Finally, friends because friend can help when you are having trouble with your family, if you forget to study for a test or quiz they could help you study before school, and friend always have your back. But pick your friends wisely because some could get you in trouble.

    1. Kalli Brigantine October 11, 2011 at 9:41 am |

I totally agree that doing something kind or someone is the way to go.

    2. Kathleen From Brigantine October 11, 2011 at 9:46 am |

    3. Nicole (Brigantine) October 11, 2011 at 9:52 am |

I agree, we must appreciate t school because it will help us a lot in the future. I 100% agree it is all preparing us for adulthood.

    4. Zainab (Brigantine) October 11, 2011 at 10:00 am |

you should always respect others that is was a really nice way of putting it. Nice Job.

  6. Shelby October 10, 2011 at 1:59 pm |

I know when someone gives me a little smile or anything it always brightens my day up. So I always try to do what I would want someone to do to me. I love just a little funny card slipped in my locker with an inside joke on it or just a brightening statement.

To put a smile on my family and friends faces I always bake something or make something crafty and hand deliver it to them. I also do the locker thing I talked about earlier. I know that I always get a smile.

One of the things I love about my school is that everyone is so nice. I can always count on people to open doors for me and say hi to me in the halls. saying little things like “you make me laugh.” makes me so happy.

    1. Kalli Brigantine October 11, 2011 at 9:45 am |

I Love when people smile to. Good job!

      1. Jimmy ( Brigantine) October 11, 2011 at 9:49 am |

I agree Kalli. A good smile can brighten up everyones day.

      2. Jake (Brigantine) October 13, 2011 at 9:55 am |

I also love when people smile too.

    2. Tara (Brigantine) October 11, 2011 at 9:49 am |

I totally agree ! Doing something for other people is very nice . Great Job !

      1. kylie(brigantine) October 11, 2011 at 9:53 am |

There’s no feeling more satisfying then knowing you made someone else happy! I totally agree.

    3. Nicole (Brigantine) October 11, 2011 at 9:53 am |

Isabella, I also believe the little things are what count the most. I know a simple hello can bring me a smile to my face as well as others. (:

  7. Nicole October 10, 2011 at 2:45 pm |

A smile is the simplest thing in life that can make someone else’s day. One persons smile can be so comforting. And in order to make my parents smile, there is one thing I know I need to do. I have two brothers, Zack and Kyle, and let’s just say we don’t get along very well. Every time we do one little thing that helps one another out, it makes my parents day. So, I know there is something that I can do that is so little and easy that will make my parents smile.

And then there are my friends. They help me out so much in my life that I have no idea where I would be without them. They probably don’t realize how much they mean to me and how much they help me, but I bet if I help them out more, they will feel the same way I feel for them. It is such an easy gesture and it is for people I love.

I have so many friends that I can count on. I can ask them questions, tell them secrets, and count on them, and I always know they will be there to help me. Through thick and thin, I will always love my friends and family. I will go the little extra way to make them smile. Because one smile can change another persons day.

    1. Tommy(Brigantine) October 11, 2011 at 9:42 am |

Nicole, I feel I have one brother that I like to help out. I usually play a sport with him because thats what we both enjoy.

      1. Dina (BNMS) October 11, 2011 at 10:02 am |

It’s good to find something in common with your siblings or friends.

    2. Kalli Brigantine October 11, 2011 at 9:44 am |

I agree, i love seeing someone smile.

    3. Zainab (Brigantine) October 11, 2011 at 10:03 am |

I agree. Seeing someone else smile because of you can make the rest of your day beautiful

    4. Shawn(Brigantine) October 12, 2011 at 6:31 pm |

It’s great to smile, but it is even greater to make someone else smile. It gives me a great feeling to know I made someones day by making them smile.

  8. Isabel October 10, 2011 at 3:38 pm |

To put a smile on my family or friends face, I think that it’s the little things that count the most. If you make little contributions each day, they will add up. That could be helping out around the house or doing a favor for your friend.
It feels great when someone helps you out. I think that it’s a nice feeling knowing that someone is out there looking out for you. That means that they will have your back. It gives you a warm feeling that fills you knowing that someone is there.

    1. Kathleen From Brigantine October 11, 2011 at 9:49 am |

Little things do count, I agree. Knowing someone’s there helps. Good job!

    2. Ty (brigantine) October 11, 2011 at 10:01 am |

I agree Isabel! It’s the little thing’s that count!

  9. jamon October 11, 2011 at 9:33 am |

some time’s my friends are not having a good day so i tell joke’s to make them laugh some time’s we cant stop laughing and then we start to have a good day.

when i have a bad day my friend’s tell me funny thing that happened to them over the weekend some time’s it’s funny and and sometimes it sound like it huts but most of the time’s it’s funny.

    1. Kathleen From Brigantine October 11, 2011 at 9:53 am |

Jokes help me go from a bad mood to a good mood, just like you! I agree. Good job.

    2. Nicole (Brigantine) October 11, 2011 at 9:57 am |

I love jokes too. Even they aren’t always funny I always end up laughing anyways.

    3. Tommy(Brigantine) October 11, 2011 at 9:58 am |

This is something I would use if my friends were sad. Jokes are a great way to change the mood.

Good Job Jamon! Thats a great way to make anyone happy.

i will put a ding in the universe by my friends laugh with a loud bellow that echos into the hall .when my friends don’t feel good they will all ways have me to make their day better having me around will make others feel welcome it will make people feel like the fit in better .Some times me and Jesse laugh in class and to be continued

  10. elbe October 11, 2011 at 9:35 am |

I can make a little ding by helping out around the house more because when we my grandma gets home and she sees that the house has been cleaned she lights up. Also I can go and clean the yard or the house to make her even more happier.

When my friends or other people make me laugh it makes my day because it is funny, they cheer me up when I am mad or sad. They also know how to make others happy as well. I bet that they appreciate it when I cheer them up or make them happier. I am a good friend to them just like they are to me. 8)

    1. elbe October 17, 2011 at 9:37 am |

Three ways I can make a little ding in the Universe is by helping out my family. First of all, after an exhausting day of basketball practice, instead of being lazy and sitting around and being lazy I can help the kids with their homework. That way they don’t have to worry about doing it later, and it’s out of sight and out of mind. Plus that gives them more time to help me clean the house. Second my three sisters and my little cousin always end up leaving their Monster High Dolls, and all of their little accessories and the houses laying around on the living room floor. So we can start by picking them up then vacuuming the floor thats always covered by little pebbels and pieces of grass from them always goin in and out of the house. That way when my grandma gets home from a stressing day of work she lights up instead of yelling at us and she can relax more. Lastly I can help my grandma with dinner or even make it my self. Afterwards I shall do the dishes so nobody else has to stay up late because I didn’t do them and they are crabby in the morning. My grandma already does so much for us. She provides anything and everything we need and just by doin a little it can take som of the pressure off her shoulder and she doesn’t have to do as much. How can you make a little ding in the Universe? 8)

  11. rojo61 October 11, 2011 at 9:36 am |

You can make a little ding by doing the earth a helpful ting by not pouting and recycling mother nature would love that no more black water and no more starvation in Africa it would help millions of people and make them non hungry and happy.Any body can help the world if some one smiles then the world can smile back so even a new born can do it.>8)

    1. rojo61 October 17, 2011 at 9:31 am |

I can put a “Ding” in the Universe by helping people that need it like my friends on his science experiment and it has to be done in 2 days. And if he does not turn it in he will be in trouble with 3 people teacher, mom, dad. We are sitting in his room for 2 hours and thinking our brains out and we can hear his mom “thump thump” its time for dinner.’I’m thinking to my self man 5 minutes off.To me this is like the wizard of oz and the hour glass, and he will die because he will be grounded for 2 weeks. And next morning i was acting like its Christmas morning we both get to school as fast as we can by the time we get there we Rushed!! down the hall way it fest like my leg are going to fall off and we turned it in.I was so happy because now we can go to Scary wood and ride the tall After Shock.

  12. sekin61 October 11, 2011 at 9:37 am |

I would make it different by keeping my grades up
so my parents wont be mad that i got bad grades and know that my grades are good. To have good grades i would work hard and do the best i can ,To get the good grades i want.

    1. Tara (Brigantine) October 11, 2011 at 9:51 am |

I do the same exact thing ! I try to keep my grades up all the time .

    2. Nicole (Brigantine) October 11, 2011 at 9:56 am |

Good luck, keeping up your grades. It will bring a smile to your parents faces to see you trying hard to do good. Try the best that you can!

    3. sekin61 October 17, 2011 at 9:41 am |

I can put a ding in the universe by getting my little sister ready for school so Darcy ain’t late for work.
When Janie wakes up i will tell her not to take long showers , and i will say don’t be grumpy.
I could get her cloth and shoes. I will get up earlier like 6:30 so i can get Janie ready. Also to be continued.

  13. denwha October 11, 2011 at 9:37 am |

How i can leave a ding in the universe, is by being friendly to people and kids. I could go places and meet people. I could go to a big city are something. I could make people smile that might put a ding in the universe. Saying good morning to your parents are teachers.

    1. denwha October 17, 2011 at 9:42 am |

I can put a ding in the universe by helping out my family.I could help them around the house.I could pick up trash, the trash that is mainly on the ground is trash bags and pop cans.If i do that, that might keep it clean.I would take out the trash daily like in the morning and afternoon. The dishes i could also do, but i never really did the dishes.forks spoons dinner plates and pots. All this would be a little help.i like to cook too….but they don’t let me cook at my house.hamburgers steaks and grilled cheese. but it will still help put a ding in the universe.

  14. Lamjo October 11, 2011 at 9:40 am |

I can make a difference in the world by doing all my chores without my mom telling me to do it. I can do better in school so my grade will be better and so I can participate in more school activities and sports.
The main reason why I don’t have good grades are because the work is to hard

    1. aly81 October 17, 2011 at 9:18 am |

I can put a “ding” in the universe by helping my family. The first thing that I could do to help my family is by doing the dishes. The dishes are always dirty. The water is always gross after washing a couple of dishes so I have to change the water a couple times as well. I know if I washed the dishes more it would make my mom sharon, feel a lot better because she has a lot to do everyday after a busy day at work. It would take off one of the thing’s that she has to do during the day. It would give her a chance to relax on our soft comfortable couch. Another way that I can make a “ding” in the universe is by helping my little brother Brandon and my little sister Katie with their math homework. They are both learning how to add. I think it would help my little sibling’s learn more in their math classes. The last way that I could do is by helping my mom with cooking dinner. She’s not that good at cooking. So she is still learning. So if I started to help her cook it would help her out with some thing’s around the house.

I definitely agree with this my parents are very up to date with my grades. They want me to do good and if I do good I also wont get yelled at.

  20. jane October 11, 2011 at 10:58 am |

how can i put a ding in the universe, is by being nicer to my friends and family and start doing chores around the house so my mom wont have to be so frustrated and do better in school by getting my grades up….

  21. quill October 11, 2011 at 11:50 am |

A couple of things that I could do, each day, to put a to put a ding in the universe could be complimenting on someones work or just complimenting them in general. That would make that person feel better than they just were. You don’t have to give EVERYONE a compliment just a few people.

I like it when I am in need of help, someone will help me, no matter if its a teacher, parent, or grandparent it still helps.

    1. quill October 14, 2011 at 12:07 pm |

I can put a “ding” in the universe by helping my mom around the house.
My mom works at home five days a week. She babysits around 12-15 kids. She gets exhausted during her long, stressful days. So to put put a ding in the universe I’m going to help around the house. My twin bother and sister always wake up early during the weekends, they always wake up my mom and bother her asking for a bowl of cereal but she is to tired to. So i can wake up early and get them their bowl of TRIX™ or Mini Wheats.
Next thing is, my room gets dirty, really fast. My mom gets mad at me, she doesn’t want me to have mice in my room. So to take one more thing off her worry list, I can clean my room more often…… To Be Continued

      1. quill October 17, 2011 at 12:04 pm |

The last thing I could do to help, my mom, is to do the dishes. My mom always makes delicious dinners. But it involves a lot of dishes. By the time we are all done there is a hill of dishes to be done.

If I do all of these these things I know it will make her happy.
What can you do to put a “ding” in someone’s universe.

        1. quill October 17, 2011 at 12:05 pm |

Putting a smile on my friends and families faces, is the most important thing in the universe. I can make a difference by do work around the house without being told. Participating in sports puts a smile on my families face, they love coming and watching. The person I have that will notice the ding in the universe is my brother. I feel I have one brother that I like to help out.

It feels great when someone helps me out, that’s why I help them out. When my friends or other people make me laugh it makes my day because it is funny. My family wants me to do good and if I do good I also wont get yelled at. Caring is the way to go. It will make a “ding”.

    1. kim October 14, 2011 at 12:05 pm |

I can make a ”ding” in the universe by helping my family. First, I can turn the coffee pot in and put water and coffee in for my parents so they can have hot juicy coffee ready at the break of dawn. Second, I would help my mom cook dinner for my dad, brother, and sister. Third, I can keep the pepperoni pizza warm so it isn’t near freezing when they get home. When I bring their pizza into the living room my brother, sister, and dad will say, ”I’m starving” then I will say, ” I helped mom cook pizza for you guys. Lastly, I can help pitch in gas money for my four wheeler so I can ride it in the mountains. These are the four ways I can put a ”ding” in the universe.

To put a ding in the universe I would help people every where I go.Like if there is a old lady that is trying to carry stuff in and its icy I would help her. Also if my parents are feeling sad I would make them something, like a cake or cookies.Or if my friend needs help with something I would take the time to help them.

One thing that is really nice that someone does for me is when my mom helps cheer me up during a game when I’m sad.She would say, “Come on, just ignore them you can do it.”That cheers me up all the time.

What can I do to make a ding in the universe?I can help my parents and siblings get ready for the morning.I can make my mom and brother coffee and ,my whole family a breakfast of strawberry waffles. Then after we eat I could go and do the dishes. That way my mom will have less things to do on her crammed schedule.I could also help my Grandma carry things in from her dark green van into her little tan house.I could also do the chores without being told to like walking the dogs at the park or feeding the cats on the porch.Next I could bake stuff for my parents and my grandparents to cheer them up when they’re sad.I could bake them chocolate chip cookies or strawberry cake. That would make them really happy.Lastly I can take care of the animals at my house so every one can rest.I can feed and water them all then brush them after that I can grain the horses. These are 4 things that I can do to put a ding in the universe.

  24. loudy October 11, 2011 at 11:54 am |

What i would do to make a ding in the universe is, I would come up with new ideas by traveling and meeting people and asking “What they would like to do to make a change in the world” so I could get new ideas. Then I would take those ideas and see what would really make a difference that could help others.
What I would like to do, is learn more about what you have to do when your in the Army or the Marines. Although I don’t like how wars are still going on, i want to help out my country to possibly fight for our rights. Also see if there’s any way to change peoples minds about wars going on.

    1. loudy October 14, 2011 at 12:05 pm |

How I would put a ding in the universe is by helping my family. I could help my dad do the dirty dishes left from last night. I would do that because he already has a had enough time getting around in his wheelchair, and his cane cause he cant stand long without getting tired. I could help take out my dog to watch him. I would do that that because I wouldn’t want my dog Nemo to run away or run into my neighbors yard. I would also keep my dirty room clean so my mom wont have to yell at me for having it dirty. I would do that so I don’t get in trouble and she doesn’t need to yell. That’s how I would help put a ding in the universe.

  25. ryal October 11, 2011 at 12:40 pm |

I would put a ding in the universe by making people laugh and have a good time. I will also try to do more chores.

    1. Ty (brigantine) October 12, 2011 at 9:53 am |

Wow! That is the same one i was going to do!

    2. ryal71 October 14, 2011 at 12:07 pm |

Am I able to put a ding in the universe? Yes, I am. What i will do to put a ding in the universe is do my chores without my Grandpa repeating to tell me to do them. I am going to help……. to be continued

  26. Jordan J October 11, 2011 at 12:56 pm |

I appreciate my teachers because of what they do to help me succeed. Anytime I need it, I can either stay after school, come before school (super early in the morning) or meet at break. I know that it is their job, but they go above and beyond. The my they put that “ding” in my head as well as my day. Although being a teacher when I grow up wouldn’t be my first choice, if I were to become one, I would want to be like my teachers. Thank you!

  27. Courtney M. (S.P.S.) October 11, 2011 at 1:01 pm |

My mom puts a “ding” and smile into my life everyday. Every morning my mom gets me up out of bed and already has breakfast on the table. I don’t have to make my own or wake to the annoying buzzing sound of an alarm clock. I appreciate this because she also makes sure that I get to bed on time each night so that I get a good night’s rest.

Another thing that my mom does is that she makes my lunch without me actually having to ask her. She packs it with healthy foods that not only taste great but allows me to do well. She makes sure that I stay healthy so that I can be here a long time and am able to do well.

One more thing that my mom does that makes me smile is that she comes to every one of my brother’s football games that I cheer at. Seeing her in the stands doing the cheers with me makes me smile because when I am having trouble learning a cheer, she helps me with and I know that I can show her any cheer without her laughing at me.

I love my mom and how she puts a “ding” in my life each and every day.

    1. Ellie S. (BNMS) October 12, 2011 at 4:42 pm |

Hey Courtney! Wow your mom sounds really nice and thoughtful! My mom makes my lunch too, and she always puts in healthy foods. However If I did well on a test the day before she’ll put in a treat! Dark chocolate covered pretzels are my favorite! My brother doesn’t play football but whenever my mom comes to one of my dance competitions, she brings a cowbell, so I know that she is the absolute loudest one there! (Yes the bell that cows wear!) I tell my mom everything and she always gives me the best advice. She really knows how to make me smile, and I’m glad your mom does that too!

  28. Remy October 11, 2011 at 1:59 pm |

Making people feel happy is great. When you do good things for people, they will do good things for you in return. I have a little sister, and my parents hate it when we fight, and we fight a lot! I could help my parents by making an effort not to fight as much.

I am very thankful for my family and friends. My family is very nice and they help me a lot. My friends are also great people. You know you can share anything with a good friend and it feels good to know you have people who care about you.

    1. Ellie S. (BNMS) October 12, 2011 at 4:37 pm |

Hi Remy, I had to laugh when I read your response because I have a little brother and we fight pretty much every day! There are moments when we get along and it makes my parents really happy to see that. I am also very close with my family. I still have a lot of my great-grandparents and I’m so close with them, because I want to know that I was the best great-granddaughter that I could be! I totally agree about sharing things with friends. I know my friends will always be there for me and that feels great!

  29. Sara October 11, 2011 at 2:50 pm |

One easy thing to do to put a “ding” in someone’s day is to smile at anyone that you see that sees you. It doesn’t need to be a person that you know; it’s nice when a stranger takes the time to make your day a little bit brighter. Also, if someone is having trouble opening a door, or reaching something, they will really appreciate being helped. A few times I have needed help reaching something or opening a door, and it is nice when people help, especially people that you do not know. Even a smile can brighten someone’s day. Smile at someone, and they will probably smile back.

  30. Olivia D. (S.P.S) October 11, 2011 at 2:57 pm |

I love to help people out when they need help. It makes me feel good about myself and I like to help. When someone does something to help me, then I will help them out in return. I appreciate it when somebody helps me. It really helps me out. I have a friend in my class that always helps me with homework. I feel good that I have someone to trust that will always help me. I also help that person.

  31. Brooke (SPS) October 11, 2011 at 3:13 pm |

Something I could do to put a “ding in the universe” is to help my brother with his homework, wash dishes, or do other chores with out being asked.

    1. Ty (brigantine) October 12, 2011 at 9:45 am |

That really good! I have a brother to and I should help him too!

    2. Dina (BNMS) October 12, 2011 at 9:58 am |

Its good to help you siblings!

  32. Holly Mo. October 11, 2011 at 5:08 pm |

To put a ‘ding’ in the universe, my family and myself could smile to somebody we wouldn’t usually smile to. Passing people in the hallway, if there isn’t someone who is exactly your friend, you can still smile to them to help lighten their day. Another thing is if you pass somebody in the hallway, and they don’t look like they are having a good day, try cheering them up.
Something that I appriciate that people have done for me, is cheering me up. When I’m sad, I can always count on my friends to make things better, and I can always count on them to put a smile on my face, and make me laugh.

    1. Veronica (Brigantine) October 12, 2011 at 9:55 am |

Wow Holly, that is very nice to know that you care a lot about the other people around you and not just yourself and your friend! It’s really interesting to know that one little action can change a stranger’s mood completely!

What a great challenge this week for the Quad Bloggers: “How can you leave an impression upon the world around you?”

Like many, I value my family and friends very much, and would do anything possible to make sure that they are happy, healthy, and enjoying life. I am lucky in that both my mum and sister live very close by; we talk every day on the telephone, and I take my mum out shopping every weekend.
I have a son, who lives at home with his girlfriend, and I always try to make sure they are happy, and understand when the dishes are sometimes left, the floor is sandy after a surfing session, the washing machine has damp clothes left inside, their car is blocking mine in the driveway; if I can get a hug, it makes everything all right!
Another son lives on a farm, and I try to make his visits home or holidays with us as perfect as I can.
My brother lives in Chicago and we email, Skype or telephone every fortnight. We are planning a big family Christmas this year, with all of us getting together; times like this could be stressful, but allowances must be made and compromises suggested!

Being a teacher, I see so many young people each day, and as has been said, I do like to offer a smile, a greeting, to show interest in their lives; interaction, awareness and caring might be something that is lacking in their lives. I am a good listener, and will offer advice to solve problems, or find answers from others or from the Internet.

I love having a smile returned, a simple “Thank you”, or to see a face light up with the knowledge that what I have taught, has finally made sense! 🙂

  34. Veronica (Brigantine) October 12, 2011 at 9:51 am |

Jordan J, I have kind and thoughtful teachers in our school like that! For example; I need a lot of help in Pre- Algebra, and my old math teacher stays after school sometimes to teach me whatever I do not understand! I think it’s very kind of him to do that and I’m very thankful of people like that in the world! Jordan, I personally think that you would be a great teacher one day!

  35. Veronica (Brigantine) October 12, 2011 at 10:01 am |

Yeah, you’re right about how little things add up over time! Now that you mention it, I’ll go home today and ask my mother if she needs any help! My mother is really busy with all my little brother and sisters and I think she’ll be really happy that I offered that!

  36. Veronica (Brigantine) October 12, 2011 at 10:04 am |

I have a brother too! He is in 4th grade. Sometimes he has a hard time figuring out math problems and next time I’ll help him ! That is really kind of you to give up your time and help around the house!

  37. Joshua Cooper October 12, 2011 at 11:39 am |

One thing that I could do that would put I ding in someone’s world would be to help someone with anything, like when they drop their books pick them up for them, or just be nice and treat people how they wanted to be treated. One thing someone has done that was nice to me was just being nice. If you’re just nice it lightens up the day. A lot of people do not realize that if you do just a small thing like being nice it really makes the other person feel good.

  38. Cai October 12, 2011 at 12:11 pm |

One thing that I could do to create a little “ding” in the universe is I could hold the door for other people. I saw a commercial on T.V. where one person holds the door for someone else. The person who walked through the door sees how nice it was to hold the door, so she does something nice for someone else. Then it just keeps going on. Eventually, the first little “ding” will become a big “ding,” and the world becomes a better place to live in.

I appreciate all that my mom and dad do for me, especially all the time they spend driving me to baseball practice and sitting for double-header baseball games each weekend. I really appreciate this because they are always helping me and taking me to places when they could be doing something else.

  39. Brendan October 12, 2011 at 12:25 pm |

To put a little ding in the universe I could wash my dog, who is 205 pounds. I could also wash the dishes and help with the laundry.

I appreciate when someone helps me with anything. It could be school, sports, or even putting something together.

  40. Kendall October 12, 2011 at 12:49 pm |

When I want to put a ding in people’s day, I always try to make them laugh. Laughing is good for you. When you laugh, it is another way of smiling. Another way to put a ding into a person’s day is to tell them a compliment.

Everyone in the world has a specialty or something there good at. Maybe it’s their looks, maybe it’s the way they sing, or what they can cook in an oven. Compliments always make someone’s day.

  41. Sammy L. October 12, 2011 at 1:27 pm |

To put a small ding in everybody’s day I can smile and show them that a care. When I see someone I like to smile and say hello to them because it makes you feel good inside. It shows them that you care about them and just might make their day even better. People appreciate the courtesy of it too. Smiling makes a difference.

When someone helps me I appreciate when they make sure I’m okay or understand. Just saying something as simple as, “Are you okay,” makes me feel good. It’s like they want to make sure that I’m not having trouble or feeling bad. It really makes a difference in my day.

  42. Neha October 12, 2011 at 1:28 pm |

Something which I can do for my family and friends that would put a smile on their faces is being benignant and courteous. Benignant and courteous mean kind. For example if someone can’t kick a soccer ball, don’t yell at them, instead be courteous and benignant, and say something like “Good try” or “Great job.” Little things like this can really put a smile on someone’s face and make them happy.

I am so grateful for all the help I get with my friends and family. My friends are always there for me, and I can trust them whenever I want. Meeting my friends is what forces me to get up and go to school every single day. If I am feeling down or sad then my friends will definitely cheer me up. I love my friends and I could not live without them.

My family also does so much for me. I could not live without them. I am so grateful to have a family because I know so many children don’t. They send me to a very great school, and always make me feel better. I am so glad to have such a great family.

I appreciate many things about my friends and family. One thing that I appreciate the most about my family and friends is that they are always there for me. They are there for me when I am sad and happy. I love my family and friends.

  43. Taimur October 12, 2011 at 1:45 pm |

There are many things that I can do for my family and friends to put a smile on their face. One thing is I can be respectful and courteous to them (which I am). Another thing is giving them advice when they need them. One last thing is to stand by their side.

This summer I went to Pakistan. There I went to a cricket academy to get better at cricket. There all the coaches helped me improve and fix mistakes in my bowling. They also helped fix my batting. I got out less and took more wickets because of that. I really appreciated that they helped me.

  44. Sophie (Shorecrest) October 12, 2011 at 1:58 pm |

A smile is simple thing. But even though it is simple, it can really help someone out. That one thing can change someone’s whole day. A small gesture can go a long way.

I know when I’m down or not feeling good, I like when my friends come over and make me laugh. It makes me smile and feel a lot better. It’s funny how just one little thing can change how you feel. So to make a “ding” in my friend’s day I will go and make them smile or laugh. That always makes your spirits rise inside.

Another thing I like is when people come over and help me when I’m struggling. Maybe I’m already having a tough day but then when I need help, it’s always nice to have someone there for you. You can tell that they are a true friend that cares about you. So when I see that someone needs help, I will walk over and help them out with what they need. As people always say, “Treat people the way you want to be treated.”

  45. Julie October 12, 2011 at 2:22 pm |

Making the littlest effort to help someone can really change his or her day. Even if that small thing you did might seem like nothing to you, it might really improve someone’s mood. Sometimes even the smallest nice things can make someone feel better. Everyday I always appreciate my friends for always being there to cheer me up. Just being with my friends makes me happy. They always know what to say to me, at the right time to make me feel better. I really appreciate them and I’m so lucky to have such great friends.

  46. Libby October 12, 2011 at 2:46 pm |

I love making my friends laugh and seeing other people smiling. (I don’t really know who would want to see frowning people but…you never know who’s out there reading this) Whenever I see somebody struggling with a homework question, I at least try to help or see if we can work the problem together. I do the little things like opening a door, smiling when someone walks by, saying bless you, or even commenting on some one’s new hair cut. I think that everybody should at least try to do these little “dings” everyday, because sometimes when you’re having a bad day, a little smile just always helps.

I have great friends and an amazing family. If I’m feeling down or nervous or just tired they can always make me laugh or smile no matter what. We just all have a great sense of humor, and when we hang out, we “ding” by making everyone feel good. There are just some people who have a good “disposition” and those people are just so friendly they “ding” all over the place. One of my friends from camp just only says positive things and can always make you feel better, even if you are already feeling good. I think a good example of a “ding” reaction is that commercial for that insurance company where one person does something good, and that makes the other person do something good, and so on. If we could that going, every day would be a good day.

  47. Chisom October 12, 2011 at 2:58 pm |

The smallest thing you do can mean the world to someone else. People really do appreciate it when you go out of your way to do something for them. It can really make someone’s day. Maybe there day just isn’t going too well, but you go and say hi to them and that will keep their spirits up. I’ll wash the dishes more because I like seeing my family. It makes me happy to see my friends happy. My friends mean so much to me. Friends are with you through thick and thin. My friend Courtney M. and I say hi to each other by our lockers between class. We are usually happy after we leave our locker, going to our classes, when we say hello. I’m really happy she’s next to me because she gets me in a better mood. My friends our the best.

    1. Ellie S. (BNMS) October 12, 2011 at 4:32 pm |

As soon as I read your opening sentence the quote that I immediately thought of was “to the world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world.” I try to follow that quote a lot and it seems like you do to! I also love my friends. They mean so much to me and always try to pick me up when I’m down. It seems like Courtney does that for you as well. Tell her that I said hey and keep up the great work!

  48. Kaylee October 12, 2011 at 3:39 pm |

Something that I really appreciate that someone did to help me, would be my mom, and the way she helps me with problems and situations. She is always there for me when I am hurt, when I am feeling down, and she’s there when I just need help with certain situations. Like when I was sick one day and had to stay home, she took a day off from work, and stayed with me the whole day and made sure that I felt better. My mom is the best, and I appreciate what she does for me.

  49. Mac G October 12, 2011 at 4:14 pm |

There are many things I can do to make a smile. Sometimes it is a joke some time it is just saying “Good morning.” I like to start off all days by saying something funny because it just makes the day brighter. Smiles are a great image to wake up to especially when it is on a morning basis.
I appreciate how my teachers go out of their way and give us extra help if we don’t understand something. It helps us learn. Although we usually don’t say thank you, this is my thanks to my teachers for all the help you have done to help my grade.

  50. Jake A. (sps) October 12, 2011 at 4:15 pm |

I love to laugh and making otheres do the same. All of my friends have a sense of humer some stronger than others. My dad also has a great sense of humer and the funniest laugh. But also phsical comody is the funniest of all of my humers. Some times those types of jokes can spread like wild fire on a dry prarrie, when it’s raining lighter fluid. But when some jokes can get taken too far and some one could get hurt physicly or mentaly, and sometimes both. But thats my job to keep things on the right track and not take a sharp turn and fly off into an abyss.

    1. Ellie S. (BNMS) October 12, 2011 at 4:27 pm |

Hi Jake. I completely agree, I love to make people laugh! I have always felt that laughing is contagious as well. I also love your simile! Laughing is the way to make the world better, but it’s the only way that doesn’t evolve talking! Great ideas!
