Honor All Veterans

Veterans at Nespelem School

 

Every year at our school, we hold a Pow Wow or an assembly to honor our veterans. The picture at left shows our Grand Entry  and many veterans from our community, Native American or not. A large percentage of the Native American people enter the Armed Forces of the United States to protect our freedoms and to honor their relations who have served in the past. The VFW sponsors an essay contest each year, a paragraph about honoring all veterans. This year, two of my students created a project for the middle school. They asked that students write the paragraph about veterans, and then create a Wordle  as a word tribute to honor our veterans.

Did you know that during World War I and World War II Native Americans serving in the Armed Forces used their native languages to create secret codes that our enemies could not break?  Read about the Code Warriors at Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian.

Honoring All Who Served 11-11-11

Do you know the veterans in your family? What do you do to honor those who have served to protect us? What does your community do in honor of the veterans? If you live near a Native American Indian Reservation, there is certain to be a Veterans Day Pow Wow. If you take your veteran there, let the Master of Ceremonies know, and your veteran will be honored.

All this week, Kimy and Rista’s classmates will be adding to this presentation to “Honor All Veterans.” What do you think of their project? Please comment on their project, and if you would like to respond to the questions in the previous paragraph, please do. If you write a paragraph about honoring veterans, you can write it in a comment also to add to our honoring of veterans in any country. If you create a wordle, please share it with a link.

And remember to visit a veteran on Friday, November 11th, Veterans Day.

      TJ my grandfather was also a veteran. I try to let him know how much i appreciate his hard work for our country.

    The veterans in my family are unfortunately deceased. But, I go to the veterans in my community and thank them for all of their work for our country. I think everyone should honor veterans because they have always been protecting us from other countries and helping out with the recent natural disasters.

        I agree tara. Monday at school, my reading teacher is bringing veterans in. We get to ask them questions and stuff.

        Yes. You should thank veterans because they have been through a lot. That is probably all they want.

          Without a doubt veterans should be thanked. They have the guts to do what no one else does and that deserves a thank you at the least.

    I have veterans in my family but they have all deceased. But I honor all vetrans that fight for our country to keep it safe.

    When I honor my family we all go to my papas. Mostly all of my family goes there, so we have a real big dinner. All of us cant fit up stairs,so we go half and half. We go up stairs like all of the real close family, then we have the other not so closest down stairs. But when we say our prayers we all go up stairs and then we all split up. We do this to honor our veterans in our family.

    My grandfather is a veteran and I am very proud of him. Personally, I love going to visit him and listen to all his stories about the war. I enjoy putting on my P.J’s and laying in the guest room while he tells me the BEST bed time stories.

    I like to write letter to the veterans to show them how much I appreciate all that they have done for us. Not many people risk their lives every day to protect us. So, it is very important to appreciate all the hard work they do.

    Veterans are a part of me, and you. They mold this country into the place we know and love. Look around, and know while you do that, that everything you see, everyone you see, would not be with there without veterans.

    My community actually does a lot for our veterans. Next Monday we are having a few veterans come to our school and eat lunch with us. Also, while they are here we get to thank them for all that they did for us.

    All in all, Vertan’s Day is very important to me and it should be for you too. Next time you are complaining about something just think about all the soldiers who risked their lives for you.

      Thanks!! I really enjoyed doing the project with my partner Rista. We helped our classmates do their wordles and loved our job. It felt really great to help our teacher and our classmates.

    Elbe, I really liked your essay about the veterans. I think it really helps people to realise how important veterans are, when they’re told exactly what they do. It was really cool to read all there jobs. I gained a new level of respect for them, after finding out all that they do.

      Avis that was a great way to remember your family member. I had a family member that died in war. Till this day every veterans day I try to honor him.
